Opportunity

Please answer the following hypothetical question in an organized paragraph:

If you were offered a leadership position (e.g. CEO, president, supervisor, etc.) that you really desired, but you didn't have the credentials or the skills to adequately do the job, would you take the offer?

In your paragraph, provide specific reasons that support your opinion. Please thoroughly elaborate on the points you make.

Please put your name and your period at the end of the post.

  1. If I was offered a leadership position that I really wanted, but didn't have the required skills and credentials, I probably would choose not to take the job. I wouldn't take the job because if I didn't have the right skills, I probably would weigh down the company instead of helping the company grow and thrive. Although, something I would do is that I would go out and get the skills that were necessary for the job, then i would try to get the job again.

  2. For this situation, it depends honestly. Everything is a factor, what job position you are asked to be, for what company, group etc. However, i would like to say that depending on the job description, i would react accordingly, but even so, i probably take the position. It would be a lot of work yes. Then again, its the position i “always” wanted so. The only problem is the cons against you. If you know nothing about what your job will be, then its very likely for you not to stay in office for the high position for too long. People want workers capable of doing their job efficiently, not some random worker which knows nothing about what their doing. Basically, my main point is, in the end it all really depends.

  3. I would not take this opportunity because I would most likely get fired from my job anyway because I do not have the adequate skills in order to fulfill my job. It would be a waste of an opportunity and it would ruin my reputation because I would be known as worst CEO in the world. Even if I took the time to learn those skills, it would be way too stressful and time consuming to catch up on those skills. There is no way I would be able to do that job. If the person offering me the job is expecting me to already know the skills required for the job, then that would be even worse. Also, it would be much more fair for someone else to have the job if they are more skilled than I am. Only people fit for the job deserve the job. Even if this is something I really wanted, if I don’t deserve it, I shouldn’t get it.

  4. I wouldn't take the offer because I wouldn't be certified to take the job. I would be honored, but I don’t think I would be able to do the job correctly. If I was put into that leadership position, I wouldn't know what to do. I would most likely screw up a lot of things in that company and not make correct decisions since I am not certified for the job. I would suggest that they pick someone more qualified for the position instead of me. Since I do not have the credentials for the job, it would be hard for to actually do it.

  5. Maybe because it depends on the type of job that you got offered. If I got asked that question randomly and its a job I’m not good at I’ll reject the offer. You basically don’t even know what to do and you have a skill for something else. You can’t manage or take over the job if you don’t know how it works, what it is, or never seen before. If a job offer like that, that I know of and I like it, I would definitely take it. For example if I was randomly chosen to be the CEO of a gaming company I would take that because I had experience with videogames and I seen how people and workers create it. Basically it depends if you have experience with the work.

  6. Yes, I would take the job because there would be no other chance of me getting this. Even if I don’t have the skills to do the job, I will learn, because why would someone be offering a high level job to random people. There has to be a way to learn while on the job. Even if I fail at doing my job, I can just always resign since it wasn’t my fault for picking random people to be doing a high level job. If I really desired that position, then I must know some things about doing this job. This is a one time chance and I would take this chance to see if I am really fit for doing this job without any skills or credentials. If I did not take the job, I would be wondering for the rest of my life, what would happen if I took the job.

  7. If someone offered me a high authority job and I knew that i didn’t have the skills or knowledge to do the job correctly, I wouldn’t take it. It wouldn’t be smart to take the job and not know how to do anything and fail and have everyone be angry at you because they know you don’t know what you are doing. Even if it is the job I really desired i wouldn’t take it because if I really wanted the job then i should know what i am doing as i obviously would have to take the steps and learn to get to that position of authority. You can’t do something you desire and not know how to do it. If I did take the job and failed and got fired no one would want me to be that leader anymore even if i studied and learned more about it or if i knew how to do it perfectly because everyone already has seen me fail and ruin the company or whatever it is you are working for.

  8. If I was offered a high-ranking position in a company, but I lacked the skills and requirements for the position, I wouldn’t accept it. First of all, I haven’t received a degree to show that I’m qualified for the position. I haven’t even finished high school yet so there’s a lot for me to learn still. Next, there are other people that are more qualified for the job. They deserve the job more than me. Also, I’d have to be working day and night for the company. That’s too much for a high school student like me. I wouldn’t accept the position even if it payed a lot because I’m just not ready for it.

  9. If I was offered a job that I’m not entirely qualified for, I would still take it. I would still have the ability to learn the skills needed for the job. Even though the job would be more difficult than intended, there’s no reason that I wouldn’t be able to try and adjust and learn how to better accomplish tasks in that position. Unfortunately, taking the job would almost be a metaphorical slap in the face towards those that have worked hard to learn and prepare for that position. For someone that is granted a new job offer with little to no experience or skill, it could almost be seen as cheating in the face of someone working harder. Regardless, I would still take the job. With an opportunity like that in my hands, I wouldn’t take advantage of it and waste it. I would learn my job inside and out, so I eventually become as equally qualified as those that were originally better suited for the job offer.

I would take the offer because it is a wonderful opportunity that could pay well and give me a better authority. I would try my best to fulfill the needs that the job requires because I would want to succeed in that workforce. It could be the opportunity of a lifetime, therefore I would definitely take a chance on it. It is always better to try and fail at something, than to not try at all.

  11. If I were to be offered a high paying job, but weren't qualified or even had the skills to do said job I don’t think that I would take it. I wouldn't take a job I wasn't qualified for because the amount of work I would be given that I don’t understand would completely ruin my life. It would take me forever just to understand anything they gave me and also to get it done. Also i don’t think i would've taken it because the amount of work people do to get to where they are in life, i would see it as unfair for me to be completely un skilled in their line of work and just shoot right past them because i got lucky. Thats why I wouldn't take the job.

  12. No, because i won’t be ready to do the job and am not ready to taking something big. I don’t have the skill to do the job and it won’t be right to take the opportunity because maybe there someone in my workplace that can take my job and he have the skill and credentials for it. There other people that can do a better job than me and maybe if I got the skill and the credentials, then I will think of taking the job.

  13. I would have to say no. Take it this way, you're a small time intern at a medical facility, and someone offers you a doctors degree right then and there. But later, you have to perform heart surgery to save a mans life, you wouldnt be able to do it. Just because you have the opportunity doesn’t mean you're capable of doing that opportunity. If you’re adequate sure go ahead. But real damage could be caused if a “glass bowl” was put into the wrong hands. Work your way up and gain knowledge and skill so you could someday be that position. Its also like starting a video game and having a button say that you can skip to the end of the game. You could do it, but you won’t be prepared for the final hard levels and definitely not ready for the final boss. Live and learn.

  14. If I was offered a position that I really wanted, but didn’t have the skills to do the job, I would not take it. The reason why I wouldn’t take is because there might be other people that want this job also, and actually have the skills to perform the job better than me. It also depends on the job offer. If the job offer really needs someone that knows what they are doing, the best choice to do is to give the position to someone else that knows what they are doing. But if it is a job that just needs leadership, I probably would take the job.

  15. I would take the position because the higher the position in the company you are the more money you make the more power you have. I would also take this position because when you get a high position in a company you get to boss people around and don’t have to take orders from anyone. You can also get away with playing games at work and say it was an important meeting and you took the guy golfing. Lastly I would take the title because it would prove the people who said you were going to get no where in life wrong.

  16. If I were to be offered a position i really desired but did not have the skills for, I would take the offer. Even though I may not make the right choices, at least I would be giving it a try. I would rather have tried, than dwell on the “What if I had took that job”. You are rarely given an offer like that, so why would you pass it up? Our world is full of people who live their life thinking about what they could have done, and I definitely do not want to be one of those people. I would take the offer, do my best to learn what must be done, and if worst comes to worst, I would fail, be fired, and move on. Life is full of opportunities, but some are a lot more important, and a lot more rare than others, so passing ones like that up would be just plain stupid.

  17. I would take the opportunity of a leadership position because is it a once in a lifetime chance. Even if I didn't have the skills to perform this task, i would’ve still taken this chance and become a CEO or a president of a company. For the company to choose you for a CEO, there must have been a reason to be chosen. Also, even if I’m not fit for the job, I will still try to do my best and I could also learn new things from it. If I get fired because I wasn't able to do the job, I would've been fine with it since it was an amazing chance. It’s always better to try then regretting it later for not taking the opportunity.

  18. If I were offered an opportunity to obtain a leadership position yet I did not have the credentials to accurately perform this position, I would not take the opportunity because I would not know how to perform most tasks. One reason why I wouldn't is because if something to go wrong while I am in that position, I would have a very high chance of being unable to solve the problem due to inadequate skills that I have or did not obtain. Another reason is that I would have to be counted on for many things that would be poorly done by myself because of the lack of skills as well as it would create bigger problems for the company, myself, and others. A last reason why I would not take the position is that if I were to have taken the position and I were to have poorly done the job, it would affect my future as well as the other ideas of those who know me. This is also a big factor because if I were to be fired from the job then any place I would try and work at would see that I failed at a high level job and my chances of getting a higher job in time would take a lot longer or it would not be available at all to me.

  19. I would take that job even if i didn’t meet the requirements for it. What is life but simply pushing the limits and learned to adapt to your new environment? A lot of jobs have on the job learning, for example being a doctor. They go to medical school and learn what there is to know about the human body and the different reactions that take place but medical school could prepare you for doing it on real live people. They learn on the job what it is like really applying the skills you have been taught. Besides CEO’s must have advisors or help with their jobs and if you are getting offered the job it must be because you are only one level below him/her so the job can only be a little more than what you are doing now. People are made to adapt to their surroundings so getting this new higher level job can’t be all the hard to get used to especially if you are only a level below them. It’s like the presidential backup system. If the president goes down then the vice president takes over, then the speaker of the house and so on. THe speaker of the house may not be qualified to do the presidents job but if both the president and the vice president fall then he/she is expected to step up. Taking this job would be hard at first but over time and with a little help you can adapt and run smoothly.

  20. I wouldn't take the offer, because if i don't have the credentials or the skills to adequately do the job then i wouldn't be an effective leader and would most likely mess up. Some people work hard for leadership positions such as CEO, president, and supervisor so it wouldn't be fair for me to take that person's job who worked difficult. Being in a leadership position would require a lot of training and skill in order to become an effective leader , but if a person was un-skilled to fit the job , then they shouldn't be offered a leadership position. Another reason would be that being in a leadership position is a tough job , because if you mess up a single time then the people you're commanding will mess up as well. Although , It may be tempting to take the leadership position that you really desired, but should you really take the position that others worked hard to gain that position , while you didn't have the skills or credentials for it.

  21. If I was given the opportunity to be given a high title but I am inadequate for the job, I wouldn’t take it. The “head” of the organization is supposed to be the leader; if the leader isn’t good enough for the job it would affect the people under it. The people under me wouldn’t take me seriously if I can’t control them. The company would just lose profit instead of gaining and I wouldn’t want to be the reason for it. Also this new sense of responsibility, that I’m not ready for, would add on so much stress to a teenager. It’s not worth it; I don’t want to be stressed out to a point where I’m thinking about suicidal thoughts because of a company. How am I suppose to be in care of people under me when I can’t take care of myself? To add on being in this leadership position it would probably affect my reputation as a whole. I want to build up and actually earn my reputation instead of it just being given to me. I feel like that’s a better way of living. Some people would say that they would take it and have someone else experienced pulling the strings. That they would just be the “puppet.” I honestly find that stupid because they’re making a fool of themselves; people should be able to know that they’re worth much more than a puppet. Being able to do stuff for yourself is one of the best feelings ever.

  22. If i was offered the position of say the new owner of microsoft for example, I would obviously take the position because it is a title that has the luxury of authority and a vast amounts of riches that anyone would like to achieve or receive. Even though that I am not qualified for the job, I will just learn along the way and just hope that i can do the job correctly by trial and error, that will harm the company. However the company might have an anarchy because of the bad management of the company by myself, and other's personal desires for the authority and riches that come with this title, that will for sure kill me in the process. Yet again, by going through this problem of a power struggle, I do have a lot of authority over the company’s every action, like my own kingdom, which allow me to moderate on this possibility of a revolt. Going back to how i do not have the skills the adequately do the job, I can get help from my trusted friends and give them something in return like a leadership position in the company. Therefore, over time I will gain the necessary skills to properly run the company with great skill, at the cost of a lingering threat of being “Withdrawn” from the ownership of the company at the hands of traitors and untrustworthy subjects.

  23. If someone offers me a leadership position that I desire but do not have the skills to handle, I won't take it. Rather, I will leave it for someone else more skilled. If I can't do the job well, there will be no point of taking it, especially a leadership position which requires the person to guide other personnel. The last thing I want to do is to take the offer and mess everything up by assigning faulty orders or make false decisions. The only thing I will ever get from accepting the offer is an unsuitable title, or some useless power. This, however, can be a very good opportunity to improve myself depending on how big the offer is. If it is a leader of a small organization that cannot have a big impact to whatever, I may give it a try. If it is to a position such as the president of a country, then absolutely not.

  26. If I was offered a leadership position that I really desired, I would only take the position if I had the credentials or the skills to do the job properly. Many people depend on their CEO, president, or supervisor to make decisions that would affect the company in a positive way and if I am not ready or experienced enough to take on this responsibility, I could screw over the entire company. There are many other people out there that are more knowledgeable about this position and are capable of taking on these responsibilities, those are the people that should be getting this position. I also believe that people should work to their positions; it’s not okay that these things are just given. You have to deserve this type of position through hard work, not opportunity or luck.

  27. If I were offered a position of power of which I had no skills or experience in, then I would consider the offer depending on certain aspects. I can’t simply agree to a powerful position (though tempting) without any knowledge on how to perform the job correctly. Who’s to say I won’t be fired soon after because of my inability to perform sufficiently? If, for example, I were given the title of President of the United States, then I would have no idea how to run a country. Eventually, everything would fall apart. This would run my reputation, and more importantly, jeopardize the welfare of the country. However, if the terms of the job were negotiable, then I would inquire if I accept the offer, would I receive any training to educate me in the basics of the said job. If the job offered was a small job, then I would probably accept and wing it. As long as my performance wouldn’t affect anyone’s personally then i would be willing to try.

  31. In my opinion the question of whether or not I would take the position depends. If I was taking that position away from someone else who clearly had the skills required for the job, then no I wouldn’t. If someone else wanted my dream job, but they could do it better and they were more deserving of it, I don’t think I would be able to take that opportunity away from them. If I was taking the job from someone who already was in the position, I couldn’t do that either because I would feel terrible for kicking them out of their position. However, if this job was something where they couldn’t find anyone else to do it, and I didn’t have the skill set but I was the best they could find, then yes I would take the job. I would try my hardest to meet up to the requirements and to become the person that the job required. Overall, I probably would decline the offer if there were someone else better able to do it and whom deserved the opportunity more. If there were no strings attached, no one getting fired, no one who was competing with me for the position, then yes I might take it. 34. "Didn't have the credentials 'or' the skills"

This presents 3 different situations to build from: Having the credentials but not the skill, having the skill but not the credentials, and lacking both credentials and the skill.

While each scenario has its own implications, the question is asking whether or not I would take the offer, not how well I may or may not do. Because of this, it will not be about what is or isn't true, but instead what I perceive to be true about myself, and whether or not I am aware of things.

If I was aware of my skill being lacking but having the credentials for whatever reason, I'd most likely back off. Conversely, if I was completely unaware of my actual capabilities in a leadership position simply because my credentials blind me from realizing otherwise, I'd probably take the job.

If I was aware of my skill as a leader despite having no credentials, and I knew for a fact that my skills are adequate for the job, I'd more than likely take the opportunity. Otherwise, being unaware of my capabilities while also lacking the credentials to do so will obviously lead me to not choosing to take the opportunity.

Finally, lacking credentials and skill will, whether I'm aware of it or not, most likely lead to me denying the opportunity as a whole.

If I were to adapt and maintain this leadership and it was something I loved (motorsports, technology) it would be a great decision to say yes to this offer. If things were to then go bad and I did not adapt to the situations I was in and barley knew anything on what I would be doing (e.g. being president or governor) I would then quit the leadership position and move on to something else.

Someone who specializes in such a field would be able to succeed while I with no talent in the area would fail. For example, you don't let a teenager become president to run a country since that teenager isn't as equipped with political decision-making as someone who has been properly educated and experienced for presidency. Even as a CEO of a business, you can ruin that business if you don't know what to do. However, if it were a role that only required skills smaller job, like being a waitress, I would possibly take it, knowing it wouldn't affect people as much as being a high leadership position. Taking a position or a job really depends on if you're amount of skill/knowledge will affect those that you work with.

  41. If I got a leadership position but I did not have the credentials, I would keep the job that I would have and not take the leader position. I would not take it because I don't want a job that I can't do. The job would be too hard and I would fail to complete the tasks that were given to me.

  42. If i was offered a leadership position and i did not have the skills that pertain to that job, i would not take the job because if i didn't know anything, my lack of knowledge for the company will start a chain reaction until the company is no more. If i were a CEO of a company and i did not know anything about the company, i would ruin the natural order of production in that company and not just me, but everyone else in the company would go down with me. I would not take the risk and ruin everyone's job just because i wanted to be named the CEO of a company I've never heard of

  43. If I were in this situation then I probably wouldn't take the offer. The reason being is that even though I would make more money than I would regularly make, the company or group could instantly go down because I wouldn't know anything about the job because I wouldn't have the proper requirements needed for it. For example, if I was given the title of CEO for Google and I didn't know anything about how web-developing works then Google's reputation would plummet. It's like asking a baby to fix a car, when he doesn't know anything about proper car mechanics.I don't want to risk getting hired for a job when I know that there's someone out there who deserves it more than I do because I would do more harm than good.

If I were given this opportunity then i wouldn't take the offer because if i have no skills I will probably mess everything up trying to figure out what to do, I could probably end up putting the company in bankruptcy and I wouldn't now how to fix it, but if i did take the job I would try and learn more about what i'm suppose to do so I don't disappoint anyone.

  45. If I were offered a leadership position I really desired though I did not have the credentials or the skills to adequately do the job, I would take the offer because the risk is worth it, depending on the job. When given an opportunity, you should take it and if you failed, you still earned experience from that job. That experience if you failed would tell you where you need to improve in order to get that job. Skills can be learned while having the job, and credentials can be inaccurate. If you do well at the job, your credentials would not matter. Usually if you desired a job, you would have already have a basic understanding, so you should not have to wonder if you are even able to complete the basics of that job.

  46. In the event that I was offered my dream leadership position at school/in a company/wherever, but I didn't have the experience for it, I know that I would not take it. I have a very strong belief that leadership is not based off of position, but action. People can be called CEOs or Presidents, but if they don't act like one, they are never truly one. So, if I didn't have the credentials, I wouldn't be selfish and take the job away from someone that could actually do it right. I honestly do ccare about what I could contribute to the company over what position I hold. I wouldn't want to become a CEO just for the sake of saying that I am a CEO. It has to mean something, and there has to be the right amount of work put in to reach that level.

  47. If I was ever offered a leadership position without skills to do the job... I wouldn’t hesitate to say yes. I’ve always had this thought on the back of my head, thinking that if I was going to do something new, I know that I would eventually get the hang of it. For example, If I was given a position that my friends majored in and I was offered to be President of their company. I would spend the time that I’m President of the company, studying with my friends or take classes for that position. The best thing about being President is getting all the income that I can get. The income in such a short amount of time could probably make me, my family, and friends happy. On the other hand, If I wasn’t a good leader, then it would be the best run I could have, getting all the income, but you always want to aim high and survive as long as you can at the top. The worst fear that I have is not having a decent amount of money for my family when I grow up, so I would take anything good and use it wisely. In the end, when I grow up, If there’s anything that was offered to me that was reasonably good, I would accept no matter what.

  48. If I was offered a leadership position that I had no skills to adequately, I would probably try to figure out what I should do for that certain type of job. I know that it would be hard for me to adapt to that job since I wouldn't have any experience in doing. In my opinion, I would try to take that offer and try to learn off the job. Making these types of decision would be hard for that person to adapt too. For example, if I was the president of the United States, I would have NO idea what I would be doing. I wouldn't know how to set commands for other, run the white house, make decision and etc... It would be a good idea to get a good feel of how the position would be if you were offered it, but at the same time, I would still want to learn how it would work and operate. Everything would fall apart if you didn't know what to do for that job.

  49. If I was offered that opportunity to take a leadership position in a company but don't have the credentials and skills to do so, I would not take the job. Even if I desired that job it would not be worth it. Without the correct skills I would have a hard time just running the company. If that company fails because of my decisions as leader, it might damage my chances at the next job. Being a leader means that people are going to have to depend on my decisions. Because of my lack of experience or skill, I would most likely make the wrong decisions. This wont affect only me but the other people that I am leading. It is just too risky.

  50. If I was offered a leadership position at a job that I really wanted, but i didn't have the skills to do the job, I would take the offer. It's something that I desire and I believe that given that one-time offer of finally doing something that I like, I wouldn't take that offer to waste. But, if I didn't have skills to do it, I can always learn. I believe that even though I don't know how to do the job, I should still take the risk because there is a chance that I can fail, but there is also a chance that I can succeed. If I truly can't do the job, then I can always quit, but at least I know that I tried and I could have succeeded, but perhaps it wasn't the time.

  51. If I was offered a position that is not suited for me due to the lack of skill and credentials, then I would not take the position. The amount of money that i will earn would be really tempting but I would still need to turn it down. Even though I really desire the position, I still would have to deny it because I would not have enough experience. The lack of experience would hold everyone back and all the blame would be on me. It would cause me stress and everyone else stress. It could also cause the downfall of the company or business. The company that I would be working for or "leading" would eventually fire me and it would reflect my reputation. My conscience would tell me not to because I do not take things I do not deserve.

  53. If I was offered to lead a company but didn't have the specifications and skills to do it properly, I wouldn't take the job. Even if it was my dream job, I know better. Not only would it be a blow to my conscience considering that some other well educated businessman could take the position, but it's also the fact that I know if I wasn't well educated and led something that important but I couldn't adapt, I would just way the company down in someway. I wouldn't risk bringing down a company hard earned reputation that involves the profession or field that I desired the most. I'd just end up hindering the company from growing and spreading. So, no, I wouldn't take the job.

  54. If I were offered a leadership position, but did not have the qualifications or skills for the job, then I would still take the offer. I may not have the skills to succeed in the job at the moment, however, that does not mean that I can’t improve myself while doing the job and learn to handle the leadership role better. Many leaders out there make mistakes even after having years of experience and credentials. That does not mean they are not qualified to have that position anymore. The leaders learn from their mistakes and develop better skills for the job. There is also the fact that this is a once in a lifetime opportunity that I may not get again. Life is survival of the fittest, a battle for the best. If I don’t take my chance when it is given to me, I won’t be able to succeed.

  55. If I was offered a leadership position that I really desired, but didn't have the skill to do the job then I might take the job. I mean it all really depends on the job. I know for sure I would take anything big like president or anything like that, but maybe a small job. I wouldn't take it out of greed, but only to learn from it. If I get the job, who is to say that I can't put in hard work and learn how to do it. Who says I can't get help with the job from fellow workers. I don't want to embarrass myself in the job, but if I know I can learn how to do the job and keep myself happy doing it then I will take the job. In a leadership position, I will have people working under me and I have the power make them do what I want(Of course not in a bad way). I can ask one them to teach me and in return give him a higher position in company/business. Regardless to say, it all depends on the job for me and I might just take it.

I know if I take the position, I maybe overwhelmed, not what to do, and just ruin everything. I may even be fired or forced to step down. I would really like to get the job, you know, the possibility of better pay, more authority, respect, living quarters, and prominence. 60. If i were given a leadership opportunity, but i didn't not have to skills to obtain this job i would not take it. First of all, someone who has worked very hard to get to the point of obtaining high leadership, were not given it, instead given to someone who does not obtain the skills, i would be very mad. Second of all, if i was to agree to do the job, i would just make a fool of myself. For example, if i was given the opportunity to be president, and i agreed to it, i would just make things worse. I would rather turn down the job, instead of having people who look up to me as a leader, be disappointed in me, because of my lack of knowledge. Lastly, i would not want to take the opportunity, because it would be too much for me.
