    Agree

People people could get killed or hurt randomly out of know where. If people witnessed it, they would be in danger or be kidnapped and out of sight. With security cameras, police will identify the suspect and save the victim.

there are time when war turn out to be the only solution, but there is always another way, it could be significantly challenging and difficult but it could be obtainable. All it could take is some work, voice of the people, and like everything else….time.

    Agree/Disagree

Reason: I disagree because war does not cause peace for all. It may bring peace to one place but they other could be completely devastated. War does not help prepare for peace. It just brings more chaos. However our society today believes that to achieve peace they have to continue their ways of violence, but because our society believes this no peace has truly been grasped. It may be temporary but more violence lies ahead if war happens. For example after a war one side may have peace but the other side could have hatred built up and might want to have war again. I truly believe that war is not needed for peace. Peace should be achieved through working together and interaction. Examples of interaction could be working on a ways to make the world a better place by working together instead of one country doing it alone. My idea for peace is for countries to be working together and not be constantly sending war threats to one another. If a country is prepared for war in order the achieve peace then they are just preparing for more suffering and violence.

The only way to prepare for peace is to be prepared for war.

    Agree

I agree with that statement because there has never been peace in this world ever since we started recording our own history. For example, back in Ancient times, the Romans went to wars to take over land and build a massive empire. Fast forward to the 20th Century and you had World War 1 which was named "The war to end all wars", but the thing was it didn't stop the beginning of wars, it just fueled it. When Germany lost in World War 1, Hitler and the Nazi Party took over and started World War 2. There has never been peace in this world, even when hippies tried back in the 60's and 70's when the Vietnam war was going on. I think that if 100% of the citizens in the country are looking for peace then the country is vulnerable because when their's no military then the country could get easily attacked. So no, there is no peace without war.

I agree because if a journalist were to publish something without it being checked then it could possibly be something against someone or have harsh things not suited to the general public. Yet I also disagree because if a journalist were to have written something that would be considered helpful to the public, it may not be considered ‘logical’ or ‘correct’ in the governments eye.

    Agree/Disagree: Agree

Reason: I agree because the news reporter should only publish their work when it’s appropriate for that time and reason. The worst thing to happen, is when a classified information gets leaked out and the enemy knows what’s going on and attacks our nation. Maybe, the Government should take care everything first, then the details can be released, once everything is taken care of.

I disagree with having cameras in public places because this would take away our freedom. Privacy and freedom go hand and hand. And even though these cameras would be in a public place, its still an invasion of privacy because the government basically has the right to do whatever they want with this video. I don't consider a country free when the government is watching anytime you leave your house and has the possibility to do whatever they want with footage of you.

  12. Assuring our country’s freedom and safety means that the government should be able to know the thoughts of its citizens.

The thoughts of people are some of the only private things that people have left. The things humans think about are unique to themselves and what interests them. A lot of people come up with irrelevant thoughts that may seem as if they are a threat to the government, when in reality it is just a thought. Thoughts do not always become actions, and that is where the government may take you seriously. People never will certainly know if something is a joke or not. therefore, I disagree with the statement that the government should know the people’s thoughts.

    Disagree

I disagree that journalists should have to make sure their writing is approved. The first amendment states freedom of speech and freedom of the press, and that means a writer/journalist should have the freedom to write whatever they please. If they had to double check with the government, their rights are being taken away from them. Restricting speech and press is restricting creativity and expression. A person should be able to write and express themselves as they please without abiding by the strict guidelines of the government.

  15. The only way to prepare for peace is to be prepared for war.
This is a very controversial topic that can be looked at from different angles. Some may agree saying that they’re open for peace while be prepared to engage in conflict with others. Also, the presence of a military does intimidate those that want to fight. On the other hand, having a war isn’t a peaceful option considering having an open-discussion about the problem. This statement can be looked either way, its just the way that you interpret the situation.

I agree with this statement because I believe that peace could only come after a war. A country can choose not to attack other countries, but it cannot stop other countries from engaging it, nor can the country stop uprisings and civil wars from occurring. Every piece of peace we enjoy are given to us by the “peacekeepers” who participated in a previous war, perhaps dozens of years ago. How do “peacekeepers” keep peace? The only way is to fight, from a street fight to a world war, they combat to give us peace. Be prepared for war, as it is the only way to prepare for peace.

I disagree with journalists having to make sure that everything they write is approved by the government because if the government has control over everything we say, our opinions would not get spread across to each other. The government would erase everything journalists say that is bad about the government, even if it is the truth, which gives the government too much power. 22. The only way to prepare for peace is to be prepared for war.
If you’re prepared for war, then you’re prepared for any other factor that might disrupt the peace. First of all, humans are too complex for anyone to determine what they’re going to do next. Greed, selfishness, and power hungriness are all factors of past wars, and I’m sure, wars to come. If we prepare ourselves for war, no form of human spontaneity will catch us off guard and disrupt our peace. At the same time, however, if we look at the other side of history, some wars or conflict are actually because of war preparations in a time without need. So, in the insistences of the Cold War and the Cuban Missile crisis, preparation for war is what led to the breach in peace. Therefore this second level question really depends on which part of history you choose to learn from.

  23. The only way to prepare for peace is to be prepared for war.

    Agree/Disagree: DISAGREE

We can be prepared for war, but we don’t have to start a war. People may not like the option of going to war; war is only one way to resolve things. Government should be ready for it in case of emergency to defend the country because “peace” isn’t always the outcome of war. The aftermath of war can be completely different than what is expected; war can affect certain people in different ways such as a country might go through a social downfall and another one can become more wealthy. Society craves for peace, but it isn’t possible because people continue to use war and use violent actions to “settle” problems. However, this world will never be prepared for peace because there is no peace. No matter how hard the world tries, everyone has different opinions which can turn into arguments or a war. Even when a war is over, it is very easy to be deceived that there is peace, but eventually, another war will come about. War has always been in the world - before the 21st century and it will be here after the 21st century, there is a war going on right now. So no matter what happens, even if there is no war, there is no “peace”. Even if the government is prepared to go into war, peace will not be the outcome because war is a continuous cycle.

  24. Patriotism means supporting your government during times of war.

    Agree/Disagree: Disagree

Reason: Patriotism means, "love of country and willingness to sacrifice for it". The definition mentions nothing of love for the government. I am disagreeing with this statement because we do not necessarily need to support the government especially during times of war. Supporting the government and supporting the country is two different subjects. Just because you are supporting the government does not mean that what the government is doing is for the good of the country. From my perspective the country and the country's government is different. Sometimes what the government says to do for the good of the country is not good in someone else's opinion. They therefore must speak out for what they believe in, and may be shamed upon because what they think is good for the country is different from what the government believes in. I believe that patrioism is someone who has a sense of pride for their country and will do whatever it takes to keep their country strong.

  25. “The Only Way to Prepare for Peace is to be Prepared for War”, To me, this is a rather confusing and unusual topic which has at least two ways of interpretation to me, but I will disagree with this idea.
One is that, peace by definition means to be at a state of harmony with others; for example, no war. When you have an army backing you, it seems hypocritical because you don’t want to have a war but you are prepared for one, not even caring about what you just proposed. And with this idea in mind, there will be a result in the back of the mind saying that you should use the army to support your movement in; say for example, trying to stop a country from doing an action that do not want them to do.
On the other hand, the people of the nation like to have a army to back them because it allows them to have a sense of security in their life. Because the populous has a sense of protect, they will more productive and not be worried about a sudden war that might break out in the city over. Also, if you take this ability of security away from the populous, they will be extremely paranoid, usually, if this happens.

Reason: I agree with the statement above words are an important form of communication and expressing ideas. Of course there are other forms of expressing ideas, like with pictures or music. But pictures and music won’t be able to go on a deeper level. So people say that a picture is worth a thousand words, but for a picture to be able to explain something, it would need words. Words are important because it allows people to understand each other and get their meanings across. For example, if someone really wanted to make an invention and they draw a picture about it. Other people are able to see his invention and what it looks like and does; but they won’t be able to feel his desire and eagerness to make this invention. With words he can express his feelings in a way that is easier for other people to understand.

I disagree because the meaning of “peace,” is to have “freedom from or the cessation of war or violence.” War will guarantee that our country will be in the dangerzone of being taken over by our opposers which will ruin our thought of peace. Throughout the history of the United States, it had multiple wars. Some wars such as World War I, the Vietnam War, and World War II, which are the most well known and recent wars. These wars were crucial to the history and caused some peace, but countered into another war. Each war the U.S. had lost the peace of thousands of people when their own family members did not return from war.

Statement: The only way to prepare for peace is to prepare for war

Response: I would have to say that I agree to this statement. This is because no matter how much we want to believe that peace has, can and will exist in the world without war, it just isn’t true since in reality, there has never even been true peace. I mean history itself is proof for this. There has never been an instance when preparing for peace actually led to peace. Peace would always be achieved after wars through defeats, treaties or negotiations. Actually, peace is almost always promoted because both sides have something to gain from it, already gotten what they wanted or the toll or damage of waging war has been to great. That’s why preparing for war can lead to peace. I mean, look at our society today. Are there any countries who are willing to declare war on the U.S. or China? No, cause they’re both well prepared for any type of conflict like wars or invasions and would overpower any possible opponents. As for other countries who are not prepared has always been forced to go to war or has been taken advantage of by stronger, more powerful countries. An example of this was World War 2 specifically directing to Japan. Japan was well equipped for war and when they saw an opportunity to gain wealth and territory, they took advantage of the situation and conquered almost all of southeastern asia in 6 years. This is why I believe that the only way to be prepared and to achieve peace, you must always be prepared for war.

Freedom of speech is a right given to a country's citizens; it allows them to write, speak, and publish anything without being punished. If articles need to be approved before being released, then that right is taken away. To censor the word of the people is wrong and unjust, because if the government sees the writing as a threat, it will never have the chance to be read. Journalists are essential to society- they serve as messengers, relaying information and important news to their communities. 48. Assuring our country’s freedom and safety means that the government should be able to know the thoughts of its citizens.

I'd like to first establish exactly what the parameters of this statement gives. While the country's freedom and safety is rather obvious, exactly how will the government come to know the thoughts of its citizens, and to what extent will it be able to extract this information?

There are two major extremes that I've come to for exactly how the government will be able to obtain information. On one hand, the questions and request for information can start with the government, and be passed to the people for them to answer straight out, like a questionnaire, for example. This also answers the second question as to what extent the government will extract information, as it is confined specifically to what the government asks of its people. Even then, the people answering can, or at least should be allowed to, respectfully choose not to answer at all, further limiting the possibility of unwanted information being leaked. On the other hand, the more destructive extreme I've come up with is that the people are the ones to distribute the information freely, and the government sweeps up as much data as it can from it. This could range as far as what should be private information being constantly monitored without a person's knowing, and being converted into data that may end up being interpreted in too many false ways to be reliable. This freeform of all this random data being distributed and monitored, while often being vague enough to seriously mislead upon interpretation, can all but destroy a country to its foundations if used wrong.

In my opinion, balance needs to be achieved. Starting from the more questionnaire styled extreme I came up with first, the government should be the ones asking its citizens about the information it wants. If made clear and concise enough, there should be no way that unwanted information is spread or misinterpreting the data can severely skew the result. On the other hand, it must be able to allow its citizens to speak on what they want to share. This way, if there is more excess information that may not be directly applied to the questionnaire but is still somewhat value, it can be shared if the people or person is willing to share it. Under this, then I completely agree that freedom and safety can be maintained by the government through knowing the thoughts of the people.

  50. 2. Patriotism means supporting your government during times of war.
    Agree/Disagree: Disagree
Reason: Patriotism means supporting your homeland not the government. The government does not equal the homeland. The government is just there to make the rules and maintain order. The people are the homeland. We can change how we want our government. The people can choose whether or not we would want to go to war. However, if the government picks that we would go to war with a country we don’t want to, we can protest. We can overtake the government like what Egypt did. The government doesn’t want that, so they would have to listen to the people. Patriotism is when you support the homeland not the government.

  51. 3. People who are a serious threat to the government should be able to be held in prison without being charged.
    Agree
Reason: Some people who have psychological problems, who have attempted multiple times in the past to harm others, should be held until they get better or are cured. An example would be just right now on the news, I was watching a segment about a man at a festival, exposing himself to children. He has been convicted many times before as a sex offender, yet as soon as he was able to go out into the public again, he exposed himself AGAIN. I think people like that, should be monitored more closely or held in prison, because he obviously isn't following the law or stopping what he is doing. As soon as he gets out again, he will probably just expose himself again.

  52. Assuring our country’s freedom and safety means that the government should be able to know the thoughts of its citizens.
    Agree/Disagree Both
Reason: I agree and disagree because it is important to know citizens’ opinions on the government and how things are being ruled to help improve things, but at the same time our thoughts are our own personal property. Personal thoughts aren’t something anyone should hear about unless you choose to share them; you shouldn’t have to be forced to share them with the government or authorities. Assuring our countries freedom can’t be done by taking away its citizen’s personal property; that would be doing the complete opposite. If the government is wondering what the opinion of its citizen's is, then they can conduct an optional survey of some sort.

  53. I agree that the government should know our ideas and thoughts because the government needs to take the citizen’s ideas into consideration. Citizens make up the country so people should have a say in what the government should do and they should be able to hear us.

  54. 1. Assuring our country’s freedom and safety means that the government should be able to know the thoughts of its citizens.
    [Agree]/[Disagree]
Reason: I agree and disagree to this, because it is okay for the government to know the thoughts of its citizens opinions, but to a certain extent whereas it doesn’t pass their own privacy. If a citizen were to be interrogated as a threat, there should be specific evidence for it.

  55. 6. For an idea to exist, we must have words to express it.
    Agree/Disagree: In Between
Reason:Ideas help visualize other peoples interpretations and allow people to see from your perspective. Ideas have spread tremendously throughout the world which has created the ideas of segregation between nations. The greatest discoveries in history are based off ideas. For example, Galileo Galilei created the pendulum, telescope, thermometer and discovered the Law of Gravity just by having curiosity while observing the natural world. Religion is also based on ideas. The belief of Christianity, Catholicism, Judaism and many more all branch out from the idea of believing that one man was the ultimate ruler of the entire universe. The beliefs of how the earth and planets were created developed through ideas depending on what you believed in. In conclusion, ideas are not only expressed through words but through your senses, interpretations and beliefs.

  56. The only way to prepare for peace is to be prepared for war.
    Agree/Disagree
Reason: Agree and disagree, you must always be prepared for war as a precaution, people will feel safer with an army at hand even at a time of peace, because who knows what could happen. But to be prepared for peace is not being prepared for war itself, but to be prepared for if it does happen, and not make it a main focus, the focus should be on peace, not war, because why focus on two things at the same time that contradict each other?

  57. 8. The only way to prepare for peace is to be prepared for war.
    Agree/Disagree
I agree and disagree to this statement. I agree with the statement because having an army in a time of peace that is ready to go when we need it would make people feel safer. Having an army could tell other countries to back down. In the contrast Having an army in a time of peace could make people worried that their government could turn against them. Having an army during time of peace could also tell countries that we are ready for an attack and so they would attack us.
